In case you didn’t hear, Nike is auctioning off 1,500 pairs of 2011 Nike Mags on eBay benefitting the Michael J. Fox Foundation. For those of you who may not remember, the Nike Mag made its debut in Back to the Future II. Here’s the clip.
Obviously this is all for a great cause, but the commercial is pretty great too. It stays true to the movie and the creators worked with what they had — no new CGI footage trying to recreate the movie. The spot features Christopher Lloyd reprising his role as Doc Brown, and is bookended with scenes from the movie. Even the legal info about the shoes not actually lacing themselves is covered within the dialogue. It all works together.
This isn’t easy to do. All too often it seems productions fall back on “fix it in post.” Adding some CGI effect, monster, or character isn’t solving a problem. It’s putting a really obvious band-aid on it.
The auction goes until September 18. Good luck!
For the record Mr. Gallant, Huey Lewis and the News had 21 singles that made the Billboard Hot 100, including The Power of Love from the Back to the Future soundtrack.
